When the confetti falls at the Superdome on Sunday night, it’s a pretty good bet that the Super Bowl 59 MVP trophy will be awarded to a quarterback. In the first 58 Super Bowls, a quarterback has taken home the honor 33 times. Add in Patrick Mahomes’ potential GOAT status as the first quarterback to win back-to-back-to-back rings and the narrative is set.
But what if we get a different kind of outcome? If, say, the Eagles win with a less-than-dominant Hurts performance, then what? Could a defensive player take it home for just the 11th time in history?
Here are seven non-QBs that I could see holding up the MVP trophy, accompanied by their odds to win it on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Saquon Barkley, RB, Eagles (+280): It’s been over 20 years since a non-QB had shorter odds to win the award than the QB on his own team. Of course, this is with good reason. Barkley has been the best player on the best roster in the league this year. The season could start with his free agency saga and end with Barkley as the best player on a championship team.
Travis Kelce, TE, Chiefs (+1800): We all know how good Kelce is in big games. Would a 10-catch, 120-yard performance really surprise anyone? Perhaps its his swan song in the NFL.
Xavier Worthy, WR, Chiefs (+3000): Early on this season, Worthy looked like an in-over-his-head gadget player. Then the lightbulb went off. In his final five games of the regular season, Worthy averaged over six catches per game, and added in a rushing attempt per contest. In the postseason: 11 receptions, 130 yards, one touchdown, three rushes. His catch percentage is over 80 percent in January. We’re talking about a volume catch guy now with explosive-play potential, and the likelihood of a couple carries added in. If he takes one to the house, we’re looking at an MVP candidate.
Jalen Carter, DL, Eagles (+7500): The best defensive player on the best defense on the field.
Zach Baun, LB, Eagles (+9000): Can author a similar script to Barkley. The former Saints special teamer and role player is back in the first NFL town he played to star on the Eagles defense. He’s forced a turnover in each of Philadelphia’s playoff games. Can he do it again?
Nolan Smith, EDGE, Eagles (+15000): My favorite longshot. Smith has been a postseason monster, and gets to face the weak point of the Chiefs offensive line. If Mahomes tries to run away from pressure, Smith is fast and quick enough to catch him.
Trent McDuffie, CB, Chiefs (+30000): It would probably take an interception and/or a score, but McDuffie is capable of making game-changing plays. If there’s a late-game blitz, watch for Kansas City to send McDuffie off the edge.
Myles Garrett to the Eagles? We reacted to the trade request of the Browns star on WIP Midday Show.
Is it crazy to think the Eagles will blow out the Chiefs? I don’t think so.
I looked at the (very) obvious key to victory in Super Bowl 59 on WIP Daily.
