A little bit of a different kind of newsletter today.
I’ve meant to write this one for a while, but wanted to wait until I actually finished the book before giving out my full recommendation.
Now, you might be wondering why it took me so long to finish a book that’s been out since last spring. The answer is much more about me than any book. I’m a distracted reader. I start reading a book, then pick up another. Sometimes, I’m reading four or five at a time.
But let’s talk about why you should buy and read Ring the Bell: How the Philadelphia Phillies Built Baseball’s Best Fan Base.
Is it because co-author Jack Fritz is a friend? No. Is it because I’m getting some sort of commission if you purchase his book? Nope! Is it because he gave me a free, signed copy when it came out? No, but that didn’t hurt.
I’m recommending it because it’s really, really good.
The trip down memory lane, with day-by-day detail, of the best moments in Phillies history makes it a page turner. The personalized author notes are unique. The Mt. Rushmore section makes you want to debate the author, while also agreeing on the premise.
There are plenty of books on particular Phillies players, teams or characters over the years. There are even some on the team’s history. But this is a unique blend of fandom, memories and history.
It’s the kind of book every Phillies fan should have.
We had Phillies bench coach Don Mattingly on the WIP Midday Show from Clearwater, Florida. Check it out.
