When the news came down on Sunday morning, you could feel the impact. The Phillies didn’t just lose a really good relief pitcher in Jose Alvarado. They lost a bullpen anchor. They lost their highest-leverage arm. They lost the guy that could get a big strikeout in any moment.

Alvarado’s 80-game suspension is crushing for a bullpen that has rounded into a better form, but still felt an arm (or two) short for the rest of the year and postseason. Now Alvarado, thanks to selfishly taking a banned substance, will miss the bulk of the remainder of the regular season and is ineligible for the playoffs.
