History is not on the Eagles side.
But does it matter?
As we countdown the hours until Super Bowl 59, here’s a look at Super Bowl rematches between quarterbacks, coaches and (if within a close proximity of time, as we now have) teams.
First, some facts and figures:
Andy Reid vs. Nick Sirianni will be the fifth coaching rematch in Super Bowl history. The winner of the first matchup has won the second in all four occasions so far. As for quarterback head-to-head battles? Terry Bradshaw swept Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman swept Jim Kelly and Eli Manning swept Tom Brady.
Here are the four previous matches that feel most applicable to our current game.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys (1975, 1978): The heart of the Steel Curtain dynasty of the 70s. Both Steelers teams were outstanding. Both Super Bowls were close in score, but only because Dallas rallied late to make it interesting. Pittsburgh was better, and controlled both games.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills (1992, 1993): The first two Super Bowls I remember watching. Neither game was competitive. Back then, the NFC Championship Game was basically the Super Bowl.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers (2019, 2023): This feels the closest to what we have now. Reid, Patrick Mahomes and Steve Spagnuolo against Kyle Shanahan, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. While a ton changed (Tyreek Hill left Kansas City, Brock Purdy replaced Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback in San Fran) around those figures, much of what happened in each game feels worth noting: In the crucial moments, Mahomes made huge plays, while the 49ers quarterback missed huge plays.
With only two years between the Eagles-Chiefs games, this feels like a combination of Cowboys-Bills and Chiefs-49ers, with the slight edge to the latter because the salary cap era has changed how competitive these Super Bowls are.
My takeaway: It’s fun to talk about, and will make this a more memorable Super Bowl. But very little of how that game went two years ago will mean much this time, except for this: The quarterback that plays best in the fourth quarter is likely going to walk away with a trophy.
We had Greg Olsen and Colleen Wolfe on Radio Row yesterday. You can check it out here.
On WIP Daily, I went over four things I need Sirianni to do differently in this Super Bowl.
