Once in a while, something pretty big flies under the radar.

That happened around here late last week, as WIP was getting set for BG Day, the Phillies were on a winning streak, and the Eagles prepared for rookie mini camp.

Howie Roseman, while appearing on the WIP Afternoon Show to talk about the legacy of Brandon Graham, dropped an interesting nugget on the status and 2025 timeline for first-round pick Jihaad Campbell.

When asked about the reality of Campbell’s injury concerns, here’s how Roseman responded:

“There's no chance that if he wasn't coming off of off season shoulder surgery, that he would have been within a distance for us to go get because he's that talented of a guy.

I think that over the last couple of years, our medical staff has proven their success with guys. That doesn't mean that we're going to be perfect. But we were very confident even when we thought that he was just the top 10 player in the draft and we wouldn't come close to him.

About how he would be, I don't even want to say long-term because I think long-term, I think of this player playing for us three, five, seven years from now, which we're all confident here that he'll do. But even in the short-term, I think for our fans is what I would say. I'd say in a situation, and I'm not saying this is apples to apples, but last year we drafted Coop in the second round.

Coop didn't play till the week of our last preseason game. It's hard to remember, but he didn't start until week six, which was really our fifth game. How did that work[…]”

Ah, Cooper DeJean. Healthy at the time of the draft, but injured working out late last summer. He missed most of camp, came into the season behind, and didn’t emerge until Week 6, after the team’s early bye.

Something tells me Roseman was intentional in his comparison. We don’t know the schedule or bye week yet, so it’s fair to say this isn’t apples to apples. Plus, every athlete heals and recovers differently.

But as we await the NFL schedule release on May 14, I’ve already started to think about the Week 1 Eagles without their biggest offseason addition. Campbell can be a star. It might be a home run pick. But the reality is that we probably won’t see that player when the season kicks off in early September.

BG Day was a great day on WIP. If you missed it, we had Brandon himself in studio to start the show. Check out Audacy to hear call ins from Jason Avant, Trent Cole, and Derrick Walton, Brandon’s dad.

LeSean McCoy and Brian Dawkins also joined the WIP Midday Show to talk about Graham’s legacy.

Is it time for the Phillies to make room for Otto Kemp?
