Has the real Orion Kerkering arrived?
Prior to the season, last night’s scene in South Florida wouldn’t have been hard to forecast: Phillies 5, Marlins 2. A sparse crowd. A well-pitched night from a Phillies starter. More power out of the road team’s bats.
And Kerkering with the save.
But early on this season, Kerkering as a late-inning stopper did become hard to envision. At the end of play on May 6, the hard-throwing righty owned a 5.14 ERA. It was fair to wonder what was going on with a pitcher that showed a ton of promise in 2023 and 2024.
Now? It feels like Kerkering has figured it out. But is that just emotion talking or do the numbers back it up?
