It’s Howie SZN.
The NFL offseason is here, with the start of the new league year just a couple weeks away. And while much of our attention remains on the A.J. Brown saga and impending free agents (Nakobe Dean, Reed Blakenship, Dallas Goedert, Jaelan Phillips), there will also be an opportunity to add outside talent to the team.
This week's NFL combine gives Howie Roseman a chance to canvas both the free agent and trade market.
Perhaps he’ll see what I see: Two intriguing trade candidates to go after in the coming months.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and Lions tight end Sam LaPorta.
Here’s the case for each.
Richardson: He’s been granted permission to seek a trade. Still only 23 years old, which is younger than some quarterbacks when they enter the league these days thanks to NIL. Talented enough to be the No. 4 pick in draft in 2023. Reclamation project. Under contract through 2026, assuming a hefty fifth-year option isn’t exercised for 2027. Would be cover if the Eagles trade away Tanner McKee. Similar to the Kenny Pickett deal before 2024.
LaPorta: Now, this one has me excited. ESPN ranked LaPorta as one of the top-15 trade candidates this offseason, which caught me off guard. It feels like just yesterday when LaPorta emerged as a star in his rookie season, helping the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game. But with recent back surgery and a slew of other young stars to pay, perhaps the Lions are already realizing a second contract won’t be coming for their former second-round pick. The Eagles need to re-make the tight end room. I’d take a chance on a player that racked up 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons.
A.J. Brown’s agent is reportedly shopping the Eagles wide receiver to teams at the combine. We reacted on the WIP Midday Show.
Here’s what I'd offer Jesus Luzardo in a contract extension right now.
