Beggars can’t be choosers, right?

As we enter Day 17 of the Eagles search for a new offensive coordinator, the reality is hitting everyone—including those who didn’t want to see the light a week or two ago: This isn’t a very attractive job.

For all the reasons it should be, the league is telling us that our perception is not reality. Mike McDaniel preferred working with Justin Herbert and under Jim Harbaugh to the coach-quarterback tandem here. Brian Daboll said ‘thanks, but no thanks.’ Some candidates have removed themselves from consideration.

So where does that leave us?

Here’s my updated rankings of (known) Eagles offensive coordinator candidates.

  1. Matt Nagy: Laugh all you want. He’s experienced. His head coaching tenure looks better in retrospect when you realize that the Bears gave him Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields to work with at quarterback. Has a great relationship with Patrick Mahomes. Learned under Andy Reid. Worked with the Eagles before. From the area. Knows the market and how it is. No one will be excited, but he checks a lot of boxes.

  2. Sean Mannion: I’m intrigued. Former pro quarterback. Quick rise. Helped Jordan Love and Malik Willis play very efficient football in the last couple of years. Played under Sean McVay, Kevin Stefanski, Klint Kubiak and Kevin O’Connell. Coaching with Matt LaFleur. Probably young for the job and would need time to grow.

  3. Jim Bob Cooter: He’s fine. He’s OK. Experienced offensive coordinator. Has worked with the Eagles and under Nick Sirianni. Has spent time with a variety of different type of quarterbacks, from Peyton Manning to Matt Stafford to Jalen Hurts to Trevor Lawrence to Daniel Jones. What a name.

  4. Jerrod Johnson: Similar to Mannion. Former quarterback. Current quarterbacks coach. Has helped develop C.J. Stroud. Knows Sirianni from Indianaplios. Coached under Kyle Shanahan and O’Connell.

  5. Frank Smith: If the Eagles are about to undergo an offensive line rebuild or shift, why not bring in a guy that made his bones as an offensive line coach?

  6. Josh Grizzard: Tampa Bay’s offense was a mess last year. If this is the hire, the Eagles really should have just kept Kevin Patullo.

Eliot Shorr-Parks thinks there’s a favorite in the Eagles search. We also argued about Bill Belichick. Enjoy!

Do the Eagles have a Nick Sirianni problem?
