The best part of landing Jhoan Duran

Jhoan Duran is headed to the Phillies in a July 30 blockbuster.

Gone are the days of a revolving door at closer. In is one of the best in the sport, under team control through 2027, and with the kind of career (2.47 ERA) and arsenal (averaging over 100 MPH on his fastball) that moves the needle for a bullpen that needed it desperately.

But Duran’s skill or career arc isn’t the most important thing the Phillies did by making this deal. It’s something else that might be subtle, but can matter a lot when October rolls around.
