Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
On one side: The franchise that drafted you, helped you become a Pro Football Hall of Fame-caliber player, champion and icon. And still there are dozens of close friends, plus future years of relationships with an entire fan base and region.
On the other: Your brother.
As we get set for Super Bowl 59, Jason Kelce continues to address which side he’ll root for: Eagles or Chiefs? From my view, every answer seems like a hedge. He’s unsure. I get it. It’s hard.
But if you think Kelce should (or will) root for the Eagles, let me lay out a scenario that would be nearly impossible for him to get through in any normal way.
Fourth quarter. Three minutes and forty five seconds left. Eagles up 31-27. Chiefs ball on the Philadelphia 39 yard line. Patrick Mahomes drops back to pass and hits Travis across the middle. He breaks two tackles, rumbling inside the 10. Before finally going down, Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean punches at the ball. It’s out. Eagles recover! The game almost surely just shifted to an almost-certain Eagles win.
Pan to the Kelce suite.
There’s the whole family, including his parents. If Jason is fully “rooting” for the Eagles, he’s cheering, right? He’s jumping up and down, no? It’s this year’s version of the Brandon Graham strip sack of Tom Brady. A Super Bowl-sealing defensive play. It’s a moment that would get even the most even-keeled fan to jump out of their seat.
But how does Jason do that? How could he react like that to his brother’s toughest moment in the league? How could Jason be happy if his parents are heart broken for their son?
I have no idea, and think anything like it would make it hard to actually root against you brother in the biggest moment.
The good news in the scenario painted: The Eagles would win, and we all know Fox would have a camera panned to the suite to let us know exactly what the reaction was as it happened.
We debated the Kelce scenario on the WIP Midday Show.
I went over five possible Kellen Moore replacements on WIP Daily.
