We have a phrase I like to often use on the WIP Midday Show.

“What would Howie do?”

Lately, I wish the Phillies would ask themselves that same question.

On Friday, Devan Kaney had a fascinating report about the Phillies, Rhys Hoskins, a potential return to Philadelphia, and why it didn’t happen.

The Phillies ultimately passed. Hoskins is on the Guardians now. Some think it’s no big deal. I’m not among that group.

My issue wasn’t so much with passing on Hoskins. It was the concept—and something I believe Roseman would have done differently.

The Phillies are content. Dave Dombrowski told us that last month. Roseman never is. We see it, especially last August when Roseman made five trades to help the team—even if each deal was marginal toward the bottom line.

Hoskins isn’t a great player. He never was. He’s less now than he used to be. I understand that. But would bringing Hoskins into camp be any different than going out and getting Fred Johnson or, perhaps more aptly, Brandon Graham out of retirement?

I see them all similarly: Worth the risk, even if it’s for a small edge.

Roseman does that.

Dombrowski doesn’t.

It’s as simple as that around here.

We had Brodes on to celebrate Team USA.

The Phillies could have made the Hoskins reunion work without trying too hard.
