The Super Bowl 59 battles are vast.

Andy Reid vs. Nick Sirianni. Patrick Mahomes vs. Jalen Hurts. Jason Kelce vs. his head and heart. Steve Spagnuolo vs. Kellen Moore. Creed Humphrey vs. Jalen Carter. Cam Jurgens, Landon Dickerson and Mekhi Becton vs. Chris Jones. We could go on all day leading up to one of the most compelling Super Bowl matchups in recent memory.

But there’s one head-to-head battle that’s flying under the radar, which is ironic considering the history between these two central figures in the game on Feb. 9.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy vs. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking: It’s Reid’s offense, thus the battle is Reid vs. Fangio. While that’s 100 percent true and will bear out in minute-by-minute play calling on the biggest stage, let’s not pretend Nagy doesn’t have influence in game planning. In fact, his opinion is likely weighed heavily by Reid and Mahomes as they prepare for Fangio’s defense.

And why that’s so interesting: Fangio was the Bears defensive coordinator under Nagy in 2018, the year Chicago won 12 games, made the playoffs, and lost on a double doink to the Eagles.

Nagy knows exactly how Fangio thinks and likes to play certain formations. He knows his in-game tendencies. He knows his strengths. He knows his blind spots. All the same can be said for Fangio about Nagy.

I have no idea who has the edge, but a battle between two coaches that foamed the backbone of play calling on each side of the ball is one of the more unique subplots I can remember entering a Super Bowl week.

We talked about why this matchup with the Chiefs means even more than just the trophy that’s on the line.

I dove into why turnover differential may not be as big of an indicator in which team will win the Super Bowl as you may think on WIP Daily.
